All forced induction devices increase air pressure and density in the intake manifold by pumping more air than the engine would use without it. This concentrated charge of air results in a more powerful combustion stroke in the engine’s cylinders, resulting in improved performance compared with naturally aspirated vehicles.
Eaton superchargers are a hybrid-roots air pump that is driven by the crankshaft through a belt and pulley arrangement. The rotors have a unique lobe shape and are engineered to a specific length to diameter ratio. Each rotor is twisted 60 degrees to form a helix. The two counter-rotating rotors in this much improved design have three lobes that intermesh during operation. The rotors, along with the specially designed inlet and outlet port geometry, seal timing and axial air flow and help to reduce pressure variations, resulting in a smooth discharge of air and a low level of noise during operation. The design improves efficiency compared with the traditional roots superchargers and reaches a volumetric efficiency near 98 percent.
Eaton Supercharger Division is the largest manufacturer of automotive superchargers in the world. It manufactures superchargers for original applications for several models of Mercedes Benz, General Motors, Ford, Nissan, Aston Martin, and Jaguar, with others in the works.
The Allen Engine Development supercharger uses a unique integrated water-to-air intercooler as part of its design. An intercooler removes the heat from the compressed air inside the intake manifold to increase air density. Cool air is denser than warm air. Anytime you compress a gas you generate some heat and reduce the density. Even the most efficient compressors will heat the air. Increasing the density of the charge air is desirable because it provides more oxygen. More oxygen means you can add more fuel to create more power. It’s as simple as that.
Magnuson Products handles service and the aftermarket for Eaton Supercharger Division and provides superchargers to a number of companies that design and manufacture the installation system for specific applications. Magna Charger is the complete superchar-ger system division of Magnuson Products, which supplied the Eaton supercharger for the Allen Engine Development kit.
Allen Engine Design is an engineering firm who’s primary business is the design, manufacture, and sale of intercooled supercharger systems for Ford Modular V-8 SOHC engines. |
